As living beings that require water to survive, it’s no surprise that so many of the day-to-day tasks we perform in our homes involve water in some way. These kinds of tap filters often have a slow output, which is why they’re most often used to improve the taste of drinking water. As such, this option is not as feasible for shower or garden use.

  • Distillers: A distiller uses a very basic method of purification, first heating the water to create steam, then allowing the steam to cool and condense in another part of the filter. As a result, the heavy contaminants (heavy metals, minerals, bacteria, etc.) are left behind and the uncontaminated water vapor is able to condense into a purer form.

Distillation is not able to remove all chemical contaminants, however, and generally takes longer to complete the purification process than other systems (a few gallons per hour, on average).

  • Reverse Osmosis: The key to a reverse osmosis filtration system is a very thin composite membrane that allows only water molecules to pass through. As its name suggests, such systems push against the natural flow of water into areas of high solute concentration (osmosis) by using sufficient pressure to push the water through the filter and out of the solution (thereby leaving behind unwanted minerals and contaminants).

Reverse osmosis filtration systems can also have a variety of other steps and filters, including a sediment filter for large particles, an activated carbon filter to capture chemicals that might damage the reverse osmosis membrane, and/or an ultraviolet lamp to sterilize the water of any bacteria.

  • Whole-House Systems: With a whole-house water purification system, the amount of maintenance required is minimal. Filters generally only need to be replaced a couple of times per year, and the filtration process is applied to all the water in the house rather than at a few designated taps.

Because a whole-house system is the most advanced, large-scale water purification solution, the cost can be significantly higher than the other options. A whole-house filtration system is usually seen as an investment into home improvement (and can be quite a marketable aspect if and when you need to sell your home).

Selecting the right purification system for your home can be a bit tricky, as it depends on the types of contaminants and other problems that exist in the water. Fortunately, home water analysis kits are available to help homeowners determine exactly what contaminants might be present. These kits usually run around $30 on average, which is relatively cheap when you consider the potential costs associated with installing the wrong purification system for your needs.1

Once you know exactly what contaminants are in your home’s water, you can seek out a filtration system that is known to efficiently remove those particular solutes. It may also be worthwhile to look into what kinds of water contaminants are common in your area; even if they’re not immediately present, there’s always the chance that they could appear in the future.

Another option, if you’d rather not do your own testing, is to hire an independent testing company for a professional water analysis. This is a more expensive option, of course, but it’s a good way to be confident in your results and get professional input.

  • Better-Tasting Drinking Water: Water purification systems pull particles and other chemical contaminants out of your tap water, creating a purer, cleaner-tasting product.
